Vancouver Art Galley and CUPE reach tentative agreement to end strike

The Vancouver Art Gallery has reached a tentative agreement with CUPE 15 at the bargaining table.

The Memorandum of Agreement, reached Sunday with the assistance of a mediator, is subject to ratification.

Unionized workers at the Gallery have been on strike since last Tuesday, and would return to work upon a positive ratification vote.

The vote is set for Monday.

Details of the agreement will be made available after the tentative contract is ratified.

Waste collection delayed in Hamilton following weather-related work refusal

Dozens of waste collection workers filed a work refusal on Wednesday, after freezing rain left trucks and Hamilton sidewalks under a coating of ice.

The refusal has delayed garbage and green cart collection in parts of Hamilton.

The city has suggested that if your waste hasn’t been collected by 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, bring it inside and put it out again on Thursday morning before 7 a.m.

A union spokesman stated on Wednesday afternoon that the city “has my workers working in unsafe conditions.”

CUPE 5167 Vice-President Barry Conway made the comment during a meeting of city politicians, which he entered, demanding to speak to General Manager of Public Works Dan McKinnon.

Waste collection also continued on Wednesday in Halton Region, but was cancelled in parts of the Niagara Region, including the Town of Lincoln and West Lincoln.
