A man has been hospitalised after being shot during an armed robbery in Plymouth.

A large police cordon has been put in place in the city, in Devon, after the man was hit in the arm with a bullet.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, but a large police presence remains at the scene.

In pictures taken at the scene a blood-stained piece of clothing was seen on a wall. 

Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘There was an armed robbery last night that has left one man hospitalised (not life-threatening).

‘Police have locked down the area as part of their enquiries into this matter.’

One witness who was at the scene, which is close to the city centre theatre and normally bustling with shoppers, described it as ‘eerily quiet.’

She said: ‘There’s hardly any people or cars around. A section of Princess Street and the whole of Lockyer Street has been cordoned off by police.

‘There are scene guards at several locations around the cordon and nobody is allowed through.

‘There is a section cordoned off within the Theatre Royal car park too, but other than that, the scene is very quiet.’
