Boy, 14, whose only family is his mother begs for help to save her from Covid

A 14 year-old boy whose mother is his only family has begged for help to save her from a serious Covid infection. Emilian Sosa says that his mother Erika Calderon is ‘hanging on for dear life,’ and is on a ventilator after coronavirus ravaged her lungs.

Emilian, from McAllen in Texas, wrote a heartrending post asking for help to fundraise for a specialist treatment called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). That provides long-term breathing and blood circulation support for seriously-ill patients whose lungs and heart cannot work unassisted.

Writing on GoFundMe Tuesday, Emilian said: ‘My mother Erika Calderon has Covid-19. She has been in the hospital for 22 days, and her lungs have not improved. She needs to be airlifted to a new hospital to receive a new therapy that could save her life. Transportation must be paid for in full and we do not have to cover it.’

Emilian can only see his mother via Zoom chats, and is trying to boost his mother’s spirits by singing hymns and playing violin. He told of his heartache at watching Calderon’s condition deteriorate before his eyes.

The teenager also wrote to Texas Governor Gregg Abbott appealing for help, and said successful ECMO treatment offered his mother’s only hope.

Emilian added: ‘My mother has worked diligently all her life to raise me,” Sosa wrote. “She is a hard-working single mother, and she is the only family I have left

Emilian had already exceeded his $20,000 fundraising goal by Wednesday afternoon, raising hopes that his mother can soon be transported to a larger city such as Houston, Dallas or San Antonio for specialist treatment.’

The US has now recorded 25.5million Covid infections, with close to 427,000 Americans killed by the virus.
