A burglar broke into a woman’s home and put his terrified victim in a headlock before raping her for an hour, police say. The rapist, who police say is 47 year-old Jeremy Taylor, allegedly broke into the woman’s home in Hartselle, Alabama, last month.
Taylor was arrested on Sunday, two days after police reportedly confirmed his DNA matched a sample taken from the rape victim after the attack. It saw the woman getting ready for bed after a shower, only to walk into her room and be confronted by an unfamiliar man.
A police affidavit which recalled the sequence of events said: ‘When she entered her bedroom, she was confronted by an unknown male. She began screaming, but the unknown male placed her in a headlock and told her he would put her to sleep if she wasn’t quiet.
‘Afterward, the unknown male raped her for approximately an hour. (She) was told to take a shower, and when she got out of the shower, she called the police.’
Lieutenant Alan McDearmond, of Hartselle PD, told WAFF: ‘This was very traumatic for (the victim). Very, very traumatic. So I’m very proud we can close it on her behalf. She has to live with this day in and day out.’
The rapist left a long-sleeved pullover in the woman’s home, and police quickly pinpointed serial burglar Taylor as a possible suspect.
His alleged victim contacted police again after seeing a post on Hartselle PD’s Facebook page from September 2019 that included Taylor’s mugshot, taken after a drug arrest.
She told detectives he was the man who raped her, with police then granted a warrant to collect DNA swabs from Taylor, Decatur Daily reported.
Taylor has been charged with first-degree rape, with bond set at $150,000 for that charge. If convicted, he could be jailed for the rest of his life.
