A father allegedly disguised himself with a fake beard and blackface to murder the mother of his infant child during a custody battle.
Andrew Charles Beard, 33, was charged with murder on Monday in Carrollton, Texas for killing Alyssa Ann Burkett, 24, on October 2.
Burkett was shot and repeatedly stabbed to death at an apartment complex where she worked as a manager, according to police.
The day after the killing, police said they found an abandoned vehicle in an alleyway only a four-minute walk away from Beard’s home. It matched the description of the car used in the killing.
Detectives found dark hair with apparent blood on it, as well as a dark-colored fake beard that contained traces of brown makeup, police documents said.
Witnesses who saw the incident allegedly described the color of the man’s skin as black.
A colleague of Burkett said she saw a man approach the woman’s vehicle and fire a shot at her from the driver’s side of the car, police said.
The attack was allegedly based out of revenge for Burkett winning custody over their 1-year-old daughter.
‘During the investigation, detectives learned that the suspect and victim had recently been involved in a contentious custody battle,’ a police statement said.
Beard was allegedly using a device to track Burkett, with her new boyfriend telling police that he ‘seemed to always know where she was,’ documents said.
Detectives found a tracking device on Burkett’s car as well as her boyfriend’s vehicle, authorities said.
After detectives searched Beard’s home, they found more of the tracking devices, along with a trash bag containing black boots that had been cut into pieces and smelled of bleach, according to Leader.
Her family allegedly told police that they believed ‘he was going to kill her’ and chase her ‘to make sure the deed was done,’ according to WHIO 7.
Burkett had described past confrontations she had with Beard on a GoFundMe page setup to help her pay legal costs over her custody battle.
‘It has been made clear this man will do whatever it takes to cut me out of the picture, and I’m worried that what is coming next will be worse,’ Burkett wrote.
The page has since been turned into a fund to help raise money for the mother’s burial, and has raised over $30,000.
‘Alyssa’s family felt all of the love and support this past week as they navigated the unchartered waters of laying her to rest,’ an update on the page said. ‘The prayers have been felt by all.’
Beard is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond in the Dallas County Jail.
Detectives say that the child is unharmed and safe and that the investigation is still ongoing at this time.
