Bill Gruber, one of Pfizer’s top vaccine scientists, said to Reuters that he expects US authorization for use of the vaccine in people aged 16 to 85.
‘I’m near ecstatic,’ Gruber said. ‘This is a great day for public health and for the potential to get us all out of the circumstances we’re now in.’
The study included 44,000 participants, but Pfizer did not indicate how many received the vaccine compared to a placebo.
Pfizer expects to produce 50 million doses of the vaccine this year, which is enough to administer to 25 million people.
The company plans to produce up to 1.3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021, a Pfizer official said.
The vaccine is produced by using synthetic genes that can be manufactured faster than conventional vaccines.
Data from the study has not been peer-reviewed or published in a medical journal, but Pfizer said it will do so once the entire trial is complete.
There are dozens of other pharmaceutical companies who are researching Covid vaccines, but Pfizer and Biotech have a $1.95 billion contract with the US government to produce 100 million doses beginning next year.
President Donald Trump promised a vaccine to the American people for months leading up to the election. His administration said it will have enough to supply all Americans by the middle of 2021.
However, now that Joe Biden has appeared to be win the race, it is not clear when a new vaccine will be available to the public in the US.
Trump has still refused to concede and plans to sue over what he claims to be voter fraud, although there is no evidence to support these allegations.
Biden said he plans to assemble a new coronavirus task force to take the issue more seriously than his Republican opponent.
There are over 10 million cases of Covid in America, and over 237,000 are dead.
