An elderly woman has been killed after a hit-and-run driver slammed into her mobility scooter – then drove off. The unnamed woman died after being struck in Greeley, Colorado, on Tuesday evening, with Latoya Rodriguez, 31, named by police as the suspected hit-and-run driver.
One eyewitness to the incident reported seeing five people performing CPR on the victim afterwards – while others tried to run after the red GMC Sierra pickup truck that had struck her. Rodriguez is accused of driving back to her home afterwards, before calling police.
She is said to have dragged her alleged victim’s mobility scooter at least part of the way there. The elderly woman was rushed to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Her identity will be released when her loved-ones have been notified.
Rodriguez is accused of hitting the woman while driving on a suspended license, following a previous arrest for drink driving. She has been arrested at least 13 times since April 2009, the Greeley Tribune reported.
The suspected killer’s previous crimes are said to include possession of burglary tools and criminal mischief. Rodriguez now faces charges of hit-and-run causing death, failing to yield to a pedestrian, and driving on a suspended license.
She is being held in Weld County Jail ahead of her next court hearing.
