Girl, 16, killed after 'social media beef' that saw 'bully call her prostitute'

A 16-year-old girl was killed after she was allegedly involved in ‘social media beef’ where she was called prostitute.

Mareja Pratt, a student at Elsik High School in Houston, Texas, was shot and killed on Monday, police said.

Pratt and two others, aged 20 and 22, went to confront another group about the social media harassment, which police said led to 15 shots being fired, leaving Pratt dead and the other two injured.

Pratt’s cousin Kira Walton told ABC 13 that the teen had been targeted on Instagram for months.

‘(A girl) kept picking on her on Instagram, sending people pictures saying she was a prostitute, Messing with her… messing with her to the point my cousin used to cry about it,’ Walton said.

Walton said that Pratt loved school and had plans to go to college before the incident.

‘I feel like my whole soul was ripped out,’ Walton said. ‘This is hard on my family. So hard.’

Houston Police Department Commander David Angelo confirmed that the incident stemmed from harassment online.

‘This appears to involve an ongoing social media beef with our three victims that came to this location to engage the people,’ Angelo said.

The suspect has only been described as male, and police said he fled the scene with two women in a red or maroon four-door car.
