A healthy 18 year-old girl with no underlying conditions died of Covid after the virus ‘ate her through’ in three days, her grieving mother said. Sarah Simental was admitted to hospital in her native Chicago on December 23 after a headache she had been suffering worsened into a sore throat and body aches.
Sarah’s condition continued to worsen once there, and she was airlifted to the University of Chicago Hospital for specialist treatment, her mother Deborah Simental said. But doctors were unable to save Sarah, and she died on December 26.
Her dad Don said afterwards: ‘I have no words for it. I just can’t believe how fast that it progressed.’ Deborah added: ‘It literally just ate her through. And no parent should ever have to watch their child go through that.’
The Simentals told ABC7 that they were able to stay by Sarah’s bedside as she died. They said that their daughter did not realize how ill she was, and that she was upset about having to spend Christmas in hospital.
Deborah said: ‘She called me up crying to say that, you know, “Mom, I’m going to miss Christmas.”
‘And I had to reassure her that it’s just a day on the calendar and when she comes home, “We’ll do Christmas with you.” …unfortunately she didn’t.’
The stricken mother added: ‘She said, “I’m going to be okay, Mom.” And that was the last thing.
‘So I know that she knows, eventually, we’ll all be okay. We’re going to miss her, but we’ll be okay.
‘I’m thinking that I’m going to miss out on some real milestones that every mother wants to have with her daughter.’
Sarah had been due to graduate from Lincoln Way East High School in summer, and aspired to have a career in animal care.
Covid has now infected 19.3million Americans, and killed more than 335,000.
