A couple may face charges after a suspected carjacker was beaten by a mob and died in Philadelphia.
The man tried to steal a mother’s car with her three young children still inside as it was parked outside a pizza shop on Thursday at around 9pm local time.
The woman’s boyfriend, the father of the children, is said to have chased the car which had to stop because of heavy traffic.
Police say the suspect, Erik Hood, 54, was pulled from the car and beaten by the boyfriend and some local residents.
Emergency services rushed the unconscious suspect to hospital where he later died.
The couple, who were questioned by police, are both aged 25 but have not been identified.
Local resident Kabreeze Sheed said: “What happened was tragic but it’s understandable.
“The way the streets are today you can understand why someone would want to chase down someone who was trying to hurt their kids.
“Child could get kidnapped, taken away, never seen again, held for ransom, you never know.”
Philadelphia Police captain Jason Smith was quoted by CBS saying: “I’m not a fan of street justice.
“I think everything should play out through us as it comes to criminal actions.”
