Second US Omicron case confirmed in Minnesota traveler returning from New York

A second case of the Omicron coronavirus variant has been confirmed in a person in Minnesota who reportedly recently traveled to an anime convention in New York City.

The person who contracted the Omicron variant is an adult male who was fully vaccinated and residing in Hennepin County, according to Fox 9. The man developed mild symptoms on November 22 and was tested for Covid-19 two days later.

He told case investigators with the Minnesota Department of Health that he had traveled to attend the Anime NYC 2021 convention at the Javitz Center in Manhattan that took place from November 19 to 21.

The confirmation comes a day after the first case of the Omicron variant was reported in California.

Minnesota’s health department detected the Omicron using its variant surveillance program. The man’s symptoms have since subsided.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the news ‘concerning, but it is not a surprise’.

‘We know that this virus is highly infectious and moves quickly throughout the world,’ Walz stated. ‘Minnesotans know what to do to keep each other safe now — get the vaccine, get tested, wear a mask indoors, and get a booster. Together, we can fight this virus and help keep Minnesotans safe.’
