Woman dies from coronavirus on plane after struggling to breathe before take off

A flight passenger who died after complaining of breathing difficulties on the runway had coronavirus, officials have confirmed.

The unnamed woman, in her 30s, had received oxygen on the plane and died while it was still on the tarmac in Arizona. The flight had been due to take off for Texas on July 25.

It has now been confirmed that the woman had coronavirus, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said. It is not known whether she was aware she had the virus at the time.

The woman also had underlying health conditions, the judge said. He described her death as a ‘reminder that there is no age restriction in covid’.

He went on: ‘I would strongly encourage people to not think they’re invincible from covid because they don’t think they’re in a high-risk category.’

Officials did not identify which airline the woman had been due to fly with, Buzzfeed reported. The passenger was only identified as being from Garland, Texas.

Texas has recorded more than 869,000 cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began, with nearly 18,000 deaths linked the virus. It is one of the US states worst-hit by the crisis, behind California and Florida.

US President Donald Trump has continued to visit hotspots across the country, despite cases of the virus surging in the majority of states. Last week he declared he wasn’t a ‘big shutdown believer’, after holding election rallies in Michigan and Wisconsin.
