Some 25 years ago Jeff and MacKenzie got married.
The year after they married, Jeff founded Amazon – which has gone on to become the world’s biggest company and make him the world’s richest man.
And now, under Washington divorce law, the state where Amazon is headquartered and the pair got married in, half of all that wealth could become MacKenzie’s.
According to US site Divorcenet Washington state law means: "All income earned and property acquired by either spouse during the marriage is community property. It belongs to both spouses equally, so it must be split equally between the spouses as divorce."
If that happened it would see award-winning author MacKenzie net as much as $61 billion to easily eclipse the current richest woman in the world Alice Walton fortune of $46.7 billion.
But all’s not quite certain yet.
"If you don’t want to split the community property equally – and you can get your spouse to work with you – then the two of you can decide what’s fair in a written separation agreement," Divorcenet adds .
"If you can’t agree or if there are certain assets in dispute, then you can still get the unequal division you prefer, or close to it, by convincing the court that there is a good and equitable reason for doing so."
