Meghan McCain appeared on US chat show The View and gave her stern opinions on the Royal Family in the wake of the Meghan Markle interview with Oprah Winfrey. She described herself as a “red-blooded American” and said she did not want to defend the institution as she “celebrates freedoms”. The rant was met with varied reaction online as the columnist said the “American experiment” was the way to go and that “monarchies are stupid”.

Ms McCain said: “Prince Philip is 99 years old and literally possibly on his deathbed after getting open-heart surgery.

“And his health isn’t doing well and that the timing is bad.

“Again, I want to take this time to encourage all Americans to visit Mount Vernon, and see why monarchies are stupid, the American experiment is the way to go.

“And if we have two American women, Meghan Markle and Oprah Winfrey, who are single-handedly finishing what George Washington on our revolutionary counterparts did, I’m all for it.”

The rant was met with an eye-roll from host Whoopi Goldberg who delivered a dead-pan “Ok” and moved on.

Ms McCain said earlier on the show: “My ancestors fought in the American Revolution.

“And when I was growing up, my brothers and sister and I would pretend to be George Washington and the Continental Army crossing the Delaware River when we would be in the creek on our rafts.

“I named my daughter liberty, I enjoy going to Mount Vernon to visit the homeplace of our founding fathers.

“I did not want to defend the monarchy, I’m a red-blooded 100 percent American who celebrates freedom anyway I can.
