Edwina Bartholomew was vocal about reports suggesting the Duchess of Sussex chose not to attend Prince Philip’s funeral because she “doesn’t want to be the centre of attention”. The remarks were made by friends of Meghan, 29, as the Royal Family prepares to bury its patriarch.

Ms Bartholomew touched on the interview on Channel 7’s Sunrise programme, which she co-hosts.

She said that rather than have her pals tell the world she was keen to avoid the spotlight, Meghan should have kept silent on the matter.

She said: “She’s right, if she had gone there would have been a lot of attention on her and it would have distracted I think.

“But for them just to say that out loud? Just go with the palace line would you for once! Just shut up!”

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace last week said the pregnant duchess would not join Harry at the funeral as she had been advised by doctors not to travel.

Referring to Meghan and Prince Harry, Ms Bartholomew said: “I’ve reserved judgment about those two for quite some time, but if that is true, it just makes me so angry.

“I still liked Harry and Meghan, I just, I just feel I’ve turned now.”

She said she wished Meghan would “just shut up” while the royals were grieving the loss of the Duke of Edinburgh.

After he on air rant, Ms Bartholomew was hit by criticism on social media from some viewers.

One wrote: “Edwina should shut up.”

The journalist shot back with a clever comeback line, saying: “I agree, Lynda.

“I sincerely hope they [the Sussexes] reconcile with the family this week and we can all shut up about it.”

Meghan chose to stay behind in Santa Barbara with Archie while the Duke of Sussex made the sombre trip back to the UK for his grandfather’s funeral.

He was pictured arriving at Heathrow early on Monday morning and was whisked away to a royal residence, believed to be Frogmore Cottage, to isolate.

Under the coronavirus rules, foreign arrivals have to quarantine for 10 days but are permitted to head out and about after five days if they test negative for the virus.

On Thursday Prince Harry was named as one of the 30 mourners who will be present at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday.

The duke’s eight grandchildren will also be there, as well as four spouses.

Autumn Kelly, the ex-wife of Peter Phillips, will not attend and neither will the Duchess of York, who is divorced from Prince Andrew.

Mike Tindall, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Jack Brooksbank and Kate Middleton will all join their spouses in mourning the loss of Philip.

None of the duke’s 10 great-grandchildren will attend.

The Queen will lead the nation in mourning the passing of Philip, whom she was married to for 73 years.

Due to Covid rules she may have to sit at least 2m apart from her fellow mourners as they are from different households.
