Firefighters have been battling a fire at a block of flats in Croydon, south London. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) took more than 30 calls to the blaze in Whitehorse Road from about 5pm on Wednesday.
Eight fire engines and about 60 firefighters have responded to the blaze, the cause of which is not yet known. LFB has advised people to avoid the area.
An eyewitness wrote on Twitter: “Avoid [Whitehorse] road in Croydon, at the West Croydon end, as there is a massive fire.”
Footage posted on social media shows huge plumes of smoke billowing into the air.
Video has also shown long queues of traffic in Whitehorse Road.
A LFB spokesperson said: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a flat fire on Whitehorse Road in Croydon.
“Part of the first, second, third and fourth floors of a five-storey block of flats are alight.
“Our 999 Control Officers have taken over 30 calls about the fire. People are advised to avoid the area.”
They added that the Brigade was called at 5.03pm with crews from Croydon, Woodside, Wallington and surrounding fire stations at the scene.
