‘Blood in its mortar’ – King’s College London removes Rhodes professorship after 100 years

King’s College London removed the 100-year-old Rhodes Professorship of Imperial History after lobbying by its present holder, Prof Richard Drayton. Guyana-born Prof Drayton, a former Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, said of King’s “the blood of enslaved Caribbean folks is blended into the mortar of its foundations”. Prof Jeremy Black, emeritus professor of history at Exeter University described the move as “footling virtue signalling”.
