Blundering mugger shouted his real name while robbing man at knifepoint

A blundering criminal who shouted out his own name while robbing a man at knifepoint has been jailed.

Kyle Wood made life easy for police investigators when he shouted, ‘Don’t get involved, do you know who I am? I’m Kyle Wood, keep the f**k out,’ to a bystander who tried to intervene.

Wood, 34, carried out robberies shortly after midnight on August 30, 2022, on two men who had just got off a bus and were each walking home in Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

The first victim heard a commotion and took no notice, but then Wood approached him, held up the flick knife and demanded he hand over what he had on him. The victim gave Wood his mobile phone, went home and called the police.

Moments later the second victim was walking home with his headphones on when Wood started to walk beside him. When the victim asked what Wood wanted he asked, ‘How much money do you have?’

Sarah Allen, prosecuting, said: ‘(Co-defendant) Aimi Turner ran over and both demanded money from him, pulling his hair while Wood produced the knife and held it against the victim’s back.

‘He said he could feel the point of the blade so took his wallet out and handed over £10.

‘Another pedestrian tried to intervene and shouted at the defendants and was told ‘don’t get involved, do you know who I am? I’m Kyle Wood, keep the f*** out’.’

Turner, 36 and of North Road in Long Eaton, initially denied any involvement in either robbery but pleaded guilty to the second one later.

Wood, of Clarence Road in Long Eaton, pleaded guilty to both robberies, possession of a knife and threatening someone with a bladed article.

He appeared for sentencing at Derby crown court via video link yesterday but then barged out and refused to take part.

He said: ‘I don’t care, I’m a big bad wolf’ and was heard saying ‘get me out of here’ before banging on the door to be let out of the video link room at HMP Nottingham.

The court heard Wood has 19 previous convictions for 60 offences and had written letters to both of his victims apologising for his actions.

In Wood’s defence Matthew Smith said: ‘When his life goes off the rails it is a concern because when he stops taking his prescription medicine, he self-medicates with crack cocaine.’

Jailing him for three years and eight months, Recorder Graham Huston said: ‘Both of these victims were robust, young men but they left the bus and were accosted by you holding a flick knife and for one moment one of them feared for his own life.’

Turner was given a 19-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with 25 rehabilitation sessions and a year-long mental health treatment programme.
