Body found in search for missing fiancé of dead pregnant teacher

Police investigating the suspected murder of Marelle Sturrock have recovered a body from Mugdock Reservoir, investigators have announced this evening.

Police Scotland said they have yet to identify the remains, but that officials suspect they have found David Yates, 36, Ms Sturrock’s fiance.

The development came just hours after leading investigators shifted their lines of inquiry to cover the expectant mother’s murder.

Yates was wanted in connection with his partner’s death, and he is the only one suspected to have been involved.

Announcing the discovery this evening, Police Scotland said there was “nothing has been established so far to suggest anyone else was involved in her death”.

Detective Superintendent Nicola Kilbane said the force’s thoughts were with the late teacher’s family.

She said: “Our thoughts are with Marelle’s family and friends, along with everyone affected by this tragedy.

“We are providing her family with specialist support at this incredibly difficult time.”

Ms Sturrock was discovered at an address in Glasgow in the morning of Tuesday, April 25, after colleagues raised the alarm when she hadn’t arrived at Sandwood primary school, where she worked as a teacher.

Police confirmed she was dead on the scene after arriving at approximately 8.40am, and found her unborn child had not survived.

In the days following her heartbreaking death, her friends and loved ones have come forward to share touching tributes.

Pupils, parents and carers were informed on Wednesday, April 26 in a letter from Sandwood headteacher Fiona Donnelly.
