Boris Johnson warns the fight is 'far from over' as coronavirus restrictions eas

Boris Johnson warned that ‘the fight is far from over’ after announcing the largest lifting of restriction measures since the beginning of lockdown.

Earlier today the prime minister told the Commons that the two-metre social distancing rule would be halved from July 4 as pubs, hairdressers and a string of other businesses reopen.

He told the last of the daily Downing Street coronavirus briefings: ‘We’re only able to make these changes because we have persevered together and stuck to our path.

‘The government has asked a huge amount of all of you and the people of this country met this with good humour and common sense.’

But he added: ‘The fight is far from over. This is a nasty virus that wants to take advantage of our carelessness.

‘If the virus were to begin to run out of control, I will not hesitate to put on the handbrake and reverse some of these changes at local or national level as required.’
