Former World Health Organisation (WHO) professor Karol Sikora shared her scepticism that Boris Johnson would be able to effectively implement coronavirus lockdowns in local areas. While speaking to Mike Graham on TalkRadio, Mr Sikora insisted Britain does not have the sophistication to implement the difficult system of localised lockdown. Mr Sikora: “I would like to see it explained how it would work.

“It sounds like a good idea, but forget track and trace, we don’t have that level of sophistication.

“Public Health England (PHE) have failed us completely over the last 8 week on PPE, tracing, testing and all these things.”

Mr Sikora emphasised PHE would have to work more efficiently for this local lockdown structure to work.

He added few countries around the world have tried this and those that did were not in the same position as the UK.

“I know from talking to friends of mine, one of their friends was quarantined back in China.

“She had come back from Singapore, went to go through the airport and they quarantined her in her own flat in China.

“They put a camera outside the front door and if she ever went out the front door some very burly security men would come and tell her to get back inside.

“In the UK we can’t really do that kind of thing.”

Mr Hancock explained the UK is currently developing a system to allow local lockdowns as measures are relaxed.

He said: “Yes, we will have local lockdowns in future where there are flare-ups and we have a system we are putting in place with a combination of Public Health England and the new joint bio-security centre.

“This is along with the local directors of public health who play an absolutely crucial role in the decision-making in the system to make sure if there is a local flare-up there is a local lockdown.

“And so local lockdowns will be part of the future system that we put in place as part of the NHS test-and-trace system.”
