Brewery releases beer to support Rob Burrow and MND awareness

A brewery has released a beer to support Rob Burrow and raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Black Sheep Brewery has teamed up with the Leeds Rhinos star to launch a new beer with the Rob Burrow Racing Club.

Following the launch, horse-racing and rugby fans can help raise money and awareness of MND, an incurable degenerative condition which Rob Burrow suffers from.

Around 10p from each pint and bottle sold of the new beer will be donated to the Rob Burrow 7 Discretionary Trust and the Rob Burrow Racing Club.

Rob Burrow was diagnosed with MND in 2019 and alongside friend Kevin Sinfield, has so far raised millions for research into the condition.

Head brewer at Black Sheep Brewery, Dan Scott Paul, said the new beer, named Burrow’s Blonde, was a “cracking pint”.

He added that the story behind the product was “so much more than that”. Mr Paul said: “Many of us are Rugby League fans and are familiar with Rob’s story, our aim is to use our brewing credentials to raise as much money as possible for Rob and to raise awareness for MND.”

Former Leeds Rhino player and teammate to Rob Burrow, Barrie McDermott said he was incredibly proud to support the launch of the new beer.

Mr McDermott said: “It’s a fantastic beer for a fantastic cause, it’s yet another way to get behind our little mate Rob Burrow and his family in their battle against MND.

“I’m in my element here, drinking beer whilst raising funds to support Rob, what’s not to love.”

Lindsey Burrow, Rob’s wife, said: “We’re really excited to be working with Black Sheep Brewery and launching Burrow’s Blonde.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to support Rob by simply buying a beer and enjoying a drink with loved ones.”

Lindsey added: “Being here today with the whole family, Rob’s former Leeds Rhinos teammates and the Good Racing Co team is really special. The whole family are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support.”

The launch of the new beer is the latest chapter of Rob Burrow’s campaign to raise awareness and money of MND.

So far the condition is incurable and there are no treatments which can significantly slow the spread of the disease, patients living with the condition live for just two or three years.

Earlier this year, the Daily Express launched a campaign for both Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield to be knighted.

The campaign has received the backing of the MND Association and Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive Garry Hetherington.

In a statement, Mr Hetherington said: “What they have both done is to significantly raise money and made both the profile of the MND Foundation, the movement and its striving to find a cure not only locally significant but nationally and internationally.

“They are both humble characters. They are very selfless. They are very much team players. They had those qualities when they were starring for Leeds Rhinos for many years together.

“Everyone across the country, I’m sure, will support the campaign to bestow knighthoods on them both. It would also be a first for rugby league.”
