Bridge collapses 'killing 60 people' in India

At least 60 people have died after a hanging bridge collapsed in India, it has been reported.

A rescue operation is underway in Gujarat’s Morbi district, along the western coast of the country, after the incident on Sunday evening.

Witnesses cited by local media said there were around 500 people on the bridge at the time of collapse.

Prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted: ‘I am deeply saddened by the tragedy at Morbi. Talked to Gujarat Chief Minister Shri and other officials about this.

‘Relief and rescue operations are going on in full swing and all necessary assistance is being provided to the affected.’
