Camilla urged the country to celebrate British Flowers Week starting today by placing a posy of British grown flower at windows, porches or gates for everyone to admire. In a newly-released video, the Duchess joined the initiative run by New Covent Garden Market saying: “In these difficult times, when we are all searching for something to brighten our lives, there is nothing that can lift our spirits more than our native flowers and plants.
“They are nature’s healers.
“In our gardens, in our window boxes, or even in just a simple vase, their glorious scents and myriad of colours are veritable life enhancers.
“That is why, this year in particular, British Flowers Week is even more important than ever.
“As the Patron of Floral Angels, who are based at the Market, I would like to say a huge thank you to the New Covent Garden Market and The Garden Museum for making this celebration of the wealth and variety of British-grown flowers possible, and to the people behind them; the growers, the gardeners, the florists and everyone who appreciates their beauty and their contribution to our well-being.
“Keep safe and ‘say it with flowers’.”
The video appeared to be filmed in a never-before-seen corner of Camilla’s home in Birkhall.
The smiling Duchess sat on a chair next to a lavish bouquet of British grown flower she personally picked.
Her posy, which includes forget-me-nots, cranesbill, Alchemilla, tulips, peonies, poppies, cow parsley and Solomon’s Seal, is located on a tartan tablecloth.
On Camilla’s left, there are two black-and-white pictures who appear to represent three of her grandchildren – Eliza, Louis and Gus Lopes, daughter and sons of Camilla’s daughter Laura and her husband Harry Lopes.
The Duchess’ decision to support British Flowers Week was welcomed by Rebecca Barrett, Communications and Marketing Director at Covent Garden Market Authority.
She said: “We are delighted and grateful for the support of The Duchess of Cornwall this year.
“I’m sure the stunning bouquet that she hand-picked herself will encourage others to put all things British in their own windows so that passersby can see them.
“This year, as we see non-essential retailers including florists and New Covent Garden’s Flower Market itself reopen to the public on Monday 15th June, it’s more important than ever to show your support for independent British florists and growers.”
Camilla’s love for flowers is also reflected in her patronage for Floral Angels, a charity based at New Covent Garden’s Flower Market who recycle flowers used at weddings and events into smaller bouquets to send out to community organisations, such as care homes and hospices.
Camilla and Prince Charles travelled to Scotland on March 13 and spent their quarantine period there after the Prince of Wales tested positive for COVID-19.
But the couple are now set to return to London, where on June 18 will meet face-to-face French President Emmanuel Macron.
As confirmed by Clarence House, Mr Macron and the royals will abide by the self-distancing rules still in place.
Mr Macron’s visit to the UK marks the 80th anniversary of Charles De Gaulle’s famous speech, in which he urged people to resist the German occupation of France during WW2.
