Princess Diana “felt totally aggrieved that Camilla wouldn’t go away”, according to a royal biographer. The late royal’s reaction to the Duchess of Cornwall’s affair with Prince Charles was recounted by the Princess of Wales herself. Robert Jobson described the confrontation on the HeirPod.

He told listeners: “She was someone who absolutely felt aggrieved at what had gone on and she wanted her truth to come out.

“People, when they are talking about themselves, tend to dress things up.

“She said there were three in the marriage, of course there were more than that.

“She had affairs with Hewitt and various other people.”

Mr Jobson continued: “But I think, in terms of love, she probably still loved the Prince of Wales.

“He was her husband and she felt totally aggrieved that Camilla wouldn’t go away.

“She approached Camilla and Charles about this at a party.

“She said, ‘Look, don’t think I’m stupid. I know what’s going on’.”

The biographer added: “Camilla’s response was somewhere along the lines, ‘You’ve got the children. What’s your problem?’

“If people can actually get inside of that, you can understand the rage that Diana was feeling.

“She, as a married women with two small children, was trapped in an unhappy marriage.”

Diana described the confrontation herself on tapes that were passed to her biographer, Andrew Morton.

She explained: “I said, ‘Camilla I’d love to have a word with you,’ and she looked really uncomfortable and put her head down and said, ‘Yes, fine.’

“I said, ‘Camilla I’d just like you to know that I know exactly what is going on’.

“And she said, ‘I don’t know what you are talking about’.

“And I said, ‘I know what’s going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that’.

“And she said to me, ‘You’ve got everything you ever wanted, all the men in the world fall in love with you, you’ve got two beautiful children. What more could you want?’

“And I said, ‘I want my husband.’ And she just looked down and said, ‘Well’.”
