King Charles and Queen Camilla gave staff at Fish Shop in Scotland a surprise and a half over the weekend as the monarch and his wife paid a special visit to a new local fishmonger and restaurant. Situated in the Scottish Highland village of Ballater, the closest village to the Balmoral Estate – the Scottish home of the Royal Family – Fish Shop is looking to open its doors on Saturday, April 29.
As well as the locals extending their famous Highland welcome to the new business, the staff were completely surprised by a visit from Charles and Camilla.
The Royal couple decided to pay the new local business a surprise visit ahead of its opening weekend during their pre-Coronation holiday at Balmoral in the Scottish Highlands.
According to a royal expert, Queen Elizabeth II took a week of “complete rest” in Scotland ahead of her own Coronation 70 years ago, and it’s likely Charles is doing the same with his wife Camilla by spending time at the Balmoral Estate.
The staff at Fish Shop said they were “thrilled” to welcome Charles and Camilla ahead of their opening weekend, and added they were “deeply honoured” that the Royals came to “show their support” for the local business.
Fish Shop is the latest venture from Artfarm, an independent hospitality company behind The Fife Arms in Braemar, Mount St. Restaurant, and The Audley Public House in London.
Ewan Venters, Artfarm CEO, said: “We were thrilled to be able to show His Majesty King Charles and Queen Camilla around Fish Shop on Saturday in advance of our opening this weekend.
“Sharing the values of our sister property, the Fife Arms, in neighbouring Braemar, community is at the heart of everything we do, and bearing in mind the Royal Family’s long association with Royal Deeside, we are deeply honoured that they came to show their support for this local restaurant and fishmonger.”

Located just east of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland, Fish Shop celebrates the heritage and traditions of fishing in Scotland, and has been created for those who enjoy freshly caught seafood which is ethically sourced.
To cater to locals and residents of Ballater, alongside many seasonal visitors, Fish Shop will offer a laid-back 40-cover seafood restaurant with an adjoining fishmonger.
The local business, at 3 Netherly Place in the heart of Ballater, is managed by a husband-and-wife team, executive chef Marcus and general manager Jasmine Sherry.
The restaurant menu will focus on shellfish and day boat fish, with the addition of select game, meat and vegetables from surrounding farms and estates.
The adjoining fishmonger will also offer seafood from the same boats and providers as the restaurant, with a seasonal selection of fish and shellfish arriving early each morning.
