COVID-19 vaccine: 20 million people have received coronavirus jab in UK, says Matt Hancock

More than 20 million people have now been given a coronavirus vaccine jab in the UK, the health secretary has said.

Matt Hancock said he is “absolutely delighted” and has offered his “huge thanks” to the team, calling it a “magnificent achievement for the country”.

He added on Twitter: “The vaccine is our route out. When you get the call, get the jab!”

Yesterday, the figure for the number of people getting their first vaccine dose was 19.6 million.

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi has tweeted: “BINGO! One Score over 20,000,000 people have had the vaccination (1s dose). What an achievement for February 2021. What a team! Proud to be with you on this journey.”

NHS England has said that another two million more people are about to get letters invited them to get vaccinated.

Britain has rolled out Europe’s fastest COVID-19 vaccination programme, raising the prospect of a lifting of its current lockdown restrictions between now and the end of June.
