Mr Johnson is reportedly considering three possible scenarios: restrictions on indoor mixing, curfews on hospitality venues or an immediate lockdown.

However, ministers have indicated that they will not back further restrictions with MPs stating that any attempt to tighten restrictions before Christmas will provoke letters seeking to oust Mr Johnson as Tory party leader.

One cabinet minister has even threatened to resign if a Christmas lockdown is imposed.

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) has warned that an “immediate” curtailment on indoor mixing is needed in order to stop the spread of Omicron.
