Readers voted in our exclusive poll today on whether the Prime Minister should put England under lockdown. Some 66 percent of respondents said no, while 33 percent replied yes, and one percent did not know.

Commenting on the poll, one reader fumed: “We are going to have to live with this virus the same way as we do with the ‘flu, so why ruin the economy and peoples lives?”

Another argued: “Only have a 2nd national lockdown if he wants to finish the UK off.

“We can’t afford a second national lockdown especially as they don’t solve the covid problem only defer it.

“But in the mean time destroy peoples lives.”

A third commented: “Sweden didn’t go into lock-down during the first wave and didn’t seem to suffer an more than us.”

Another blasted: “He can stick his lockdown, my priority is helping to keep a roof over my families head, put food on the table and pay the bills, we worked through the first nonsense and will continue to do so.”

A fifth asked: “Scientific advisers warned coronavirus is surging even faster than the worst predictions.

“Can the scientific advisors guarantee that a total lockdown will work this time like it didn’t last time?”

But another insisted: “Love him or loathe him, he’s doing the job no-one wants and getting no thanks.

“Let’s stop the sniping, undermining and whingeing and get behind Boris as he tries to save YOUR life.

“United we stand, so now is the time to unite behind Boris and give him some support.”

Our poll comes as Mr Johnson tonight ordered a second national lockdown in a bid to get a grip on surging coronavirus cases, as the overall total since the start of the pandemic passed one million on Saturday.

The draconian new restrictions mean people must stay at home unless for specific reasons, such as education or work, for exercise, or to care for the vulnerable.

Non-essential shops, leisure and entertainment venues will all be closed.

Bars, pubs and restaurants must shut except for delivery or takeaway services.

Hairdressers and beauty salons will also close their doors.

The strict measures will run from November 5 until December 2.

The lockdown will then be eased on a regional basis according to the latest coronavirus case data at that time.

Announcing the new national shutdown, the Prime Minister said that overrunning of the NHS would be a “medical and moral disaster, beyond the raw loss of life”.

He warned that “the risk is that, for the first time in our lives, the NHS will not be there for us and our families”.

Express.co.uk polled 11,315 people from 8.17am to 8.36pm on October 31.
