Dead sharks have washed ashore on Prestatyn beach in Denbighshire in north-east of Wales. Approximately 25 to 30 sharks, identified as starry smooth-hounds due to their distinct speckled white spots, were found scattered across the sand by passers-by on Tuesday morning.
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue organization has been informed of the incident, and a marine expert was present at the site to collect samples. Gem Simmons, the North Wales Coordinator at British Divers Marine Life Rescue, posted a message on Facebook, advising people to refrain from touching or relocating the sharks on the beach.
Smooth-hound sharks are commonly found in the waters surrounding the UK and primarily feed on crustaceans and shellfish. They inhabit coastal areas at depths ranging from 5 to 200 meters, typically residing on gravel or sandy bottoms.
These sharks measure between 100cm and 150cm in length and can weigh up to 4.8kg.
