Zoo-cam footage of a chimpanzee being reunited with her baby after experiencing complications during the birth is sure to melt your heart.
Mahale had an emotional reunion with baby boy, Kucheza, at Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, after being separated for life-saving treatment including an emergency C-section.
The mother chimpanzee can be seen peering over her baby as he reaches out a tiny hand, before scooping him up and tenderly cradling him.
Choked-up zoo workers can be heard saying ‘good job Mahale’ as she tightly embraces her infant son.
The zoo said ‘The whole world has fallen in love with Mahale and Kucheza’ after posting footage of the pair on Facebook.
‘All of the animals in our care serve as important ambassadors for their species,’ the zoo wrote.
‘Mahale and Kucheza have reminded us all that chimpanzees are smart, charismatic and amazing animals.’
Kucheza – which means ‘play’ in Swahili – was kept in hospital following the birth last Thursday, November 17, after he struggled to breathe on his own.
The zoo revealed how his doting mum is proving to be the ‘most amazing mama’ and has not put her son down since she first picked him up.
She is ‘multi-tasking like a pro’, eating while the infant clings to her fur and nurses.
‘Mahale is nursing very well with plenty of milk available for her baby,’ the zoo added.
‘Luckily apes tend to have a much stronger and longer milk supply than humans, so her ability to nurse wasn’t affected by the C-section or initial separation from baby.’
Earlier this year, a baby sloth was reunited with its mother after accidentally falling out of her arms.
The distressed animal was found crying on a beach in Costa Rica after tumbling from a tree.
