Royal biographer Robert Jobson told the Mirror that the pair have always been close, with Eugenie refusing to “abandon” her cousin after his decision to step down as a senior royal in 2020. The royals were spotted watching the Super Bowl together in California last night.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle are thought to have a tense relationship with some senior members of the Firm after they stepped back from royal duties and moved to Los Angeles in 2020.

The couple spoke out against “the Firm” during their interview with Oprah Winfrey in October, where they alleged one senior royal had asked questions about how dark their son Archie’s skin would be and Meghan admitted that life as a senior royal made her feel suicidal.

Harry also said he felt “let down” by his father Prince Charles and Meghan said she felt the family had not done enough to protect her from the media.

But according to Mr Jobson, Harry and Eugenie have always been close and remain so despite the rift between the prince and other family members.

He said: “Prince Harry and his first cousin Princess Eugenie have always been close.

“Ever since they were children messing around on the slopes of Klosters, Switzerland, they struck up a loving empathy.

“Back then, Harry was the court jester and both Prince Andrew and Fergie’s daughters would laugh out loud at his risqué antics.”

Mr Jobson explained that it was Eugenie who set Harry up with two previous girlfriends, Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas, who both attended her wedding to Jack Brooksbank in 2018.

The princess is also good friends with Meghan, whom she in fact met before Prince Harry had been introduced to his now-wife.

Mr Jobson said: “Eugenie and Harry are known to get on well, and 40-year-old Meghan actually knew the princess before she had even met Harry – something she revealed during the Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021.

“Now Harry is married and settled in the US and his relationship with his father, Charles, and brother, William, is fractured, Eugenie – who is close to the Queen – is one of his only connections to the royal family. She refuses to abandon him.”

Mr Jobson said Eugenie is “fiercely loyal” and “not one for taking sides in issues that are not her business”, instead sticking by Harry despite the current family tensions.

The prince has stayed at Frogmore Cottage with Eugenie and her husband on the two occasions he has visited the UK.

The house in the grounds of Windsor Castle was the home of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan from 2019 to 2020, before they relocated to Los Angeles.

They moved there from Kensington Palace just weeks before the birth of their son Archie, two.

Mr Jobson said the pair have become closer while Eugenie deals with the ongoing sexual abuse case against her father Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York has been accused of sexually abusing Virginia Giuffre two decades ago when she was 17, and being trafficked by the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. He has vehemently denied the allegations.

Eugenie’s father’s links to Epstein, who killed himself in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex abuse charges, have shaken the royal family.

The prince was stripped of his military titles and royal patronages after a judge ruled last month that the sexual abuse civil lawsuit against him could proceed.

Mr Jobson said: “With her father Andrew a royal outcast too after his shaming over his Epstein connections and the ongoing civil sex case against him, it is understood the two cousins have bonded again.

“Harry has also been close to Fergie too, again another who has experienced the royal wrath and exile.”
