Network Rail blamed yesterday’s severe weather for disruption, as gale-force winds and torrential rain swept the country. Hundreds of people spent the night at Euston – the worst-hit station – while officials told others to return home and hope for progress in the morning. Some passengers will have awoken to good news today, but others still face delays.

Are trains running again?

Last night, Network Rail said the severe weather had “got the better of us” in a statement.

Disruptions tore through most of London Euston’s northern services, with delays to more than 20 trains.

The most profoundly affected services included those to Glasgow Central, Liverpool Lime Street, Crewe, Northampton, and Manchester Piccadilly.

Avanti West Coast also confirmed similar issues, advising customers not to travel as it couldn’t run services from the London station.

Severe weather that ripped through the country last night had downed a tree, tearing at overhead lines at Rugby.

Workers have since extracted the tree and fixed the lines, paving the way for services to return to normality.

But they aren’t quite there yet, as some services remain disrupted.

A spokesman for the company revealed the infrastructure is “fixed and raring to go”, adding remaining disruption is “residual”.

In a statement, London Euston said the weather had displaced some trains and crews.

The station said they were not in the “correct locations” on Sunday, meaning disruptions would spill into Monday.

A spokesman added the disruption would likely affect passengers travelling “early” on “main lines north of London”.

Euston has advised passengers to check their operator’s websites as they attempt journeys today.

Network Rail also extended ticket validity for trips from October 31 to November 1.

In a notice, it added some people could qualify for compensation if their service faced delays of 15 minutes or more.

The wait was too long for some, however, who have taken to Twitter to complain.

Writing on the platform, user Ed Emmott said: 22h after our train was supposed to leave Euston, we are finally on a coach from [Victoria] coach station…”

Michael Jameson added: “Nonsense. A tree which should have been maintained or felled blew over in the wind. Happens every year.”

Another user, @GemKoeman, touched on the chaos of catching a train late at night as the delays began.

She wrote: “I travelled through Euston last night, and things were going well until I realised that we were going to make it to my station about 20-30mins late without any warning.

“Leaving a bunch of us stranded at Runcorn, the last train of the night had already departed.”
