Family devastated as father dies within days of gastric sleeve surgery

A husband has died just days after he underwent a gastric sleeve surgery, leaving behind his devastated wife and young son. Phillip Morris, a renowned writer and academic who was also a devoted husband and father, died aged 48 after never fully recovering from the procedure. The surgery was performed at St Anthony’s Hospital in Surrey on December 6, 2021, but sadly Phillip died just days later on December 10, leaving his wife Dana and young son Orson in mourning.

Due to his untimely death, Phillip never had the chance to enrol in a prestigious PhD literary program at the University of East Anglia as he had planned to in February 2022, WalesOnline reported.

His wife shared that he was fully prepared for the course, and all his Christmas presents were geared towards his upcoming studies.

Unfortunately, the surgery proved fatal for Phillip, who needed to lose between five and seven stone and opted for private treatment due to the NHS backlog caused by the pandemic.

According to Dana, Phillip struggled to breathe and speak after the surgery, and his condition deteriorated rapidly, leaving her heartbroken.

A pre-inquest review held at South London Coroner’s Court in Croydon on April 27 raised questions about Phillip’s treatment leading up to his death, with a full inquest scheduled for January 2024.

Spire Healthcare, which operates St Anthony’s Hospital, is cooperating with the coroner’s office to provide information for the inquest.

Dana, who is originally from Michigan in the US, welcomed the coroner’s decision.

She said: “Phil was someone who never talked about himself – he was always trying to promote the work of other writers, artists, and students. Sadly it’s after he’s passed that he’s being recognised.”

From 2012 to 2016, Phillip Morris served as the managing editor of Wales Arts Review, which he co-founded.

Phillip and his wife first met when he was 19 and she was an 18-year-old recent graduate from an American high school.

Despite the fact that Phillip was due to embark on volunteering in East Timor and Dana had four years of university ahead of her, the couple fell deeply in love and opted to get married instead.

Subsequently, Phillip successfully auditioned for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and the couple moved to the UK.

They initially resided in Newport, where they welcomed their son Orson, named after the famous American actor Orson Welles.

However, after seven years, they moved back to London so Phillip could pursue his passion for acting.

Dana said: “He was such a great dad when Orson was born. He was so modest. He was a great writer, a wonderful father, husband, and son and a true inspiration to everybody who met him.”

Phillip’s sudden death has left his family, including his parents, brother, sister, nieces, and nephews, “heartbroken”.

They are currently represented by Middleton Law, and their legal team is conducting an investigation into Phillip’s case to uncover more details about the circumstances surrounding his treatment and passing.

A spokesman for Spire Healthcare added: “We offer our very sincere condolences to Mr Morris’ family for their loss.”
