Fishing in Wales during lockdown: Can I go fishing in Wales?

Fishing in Wales remains a popular pastime, as locals enjoy some of the country’s stunning scenery while relaxing on lake shores. Professionals continue on their work in the country, but there is confusion about fishing for recreational purposes.

Can I go fishing in Wales?

Fishing in Wales falls into two categories: professional and recreational.

Professional fishermen are essential workers, and they have continued their work during the pandemic.

For recreational fishermen, the situation has proved more confusing, thanks to mixed messages from the national Government.

In his speech on Sunday, Boris Johnson said some of the UK’s restrictive lockdown policies would ease today.

Amongst easements is an end to some movement limitations, which allow people to undertake “unlimited” exercise and meet people under social distancing.

The Prime Minister’s new rules also mean fishing is allowed once more, but his announcement only applies to England.

Wales’ devolved local Government sets its own lockdown regulations, and it has chosen to extend restrictions for another three weeks.

The clash in policy has caused confusion over the border, where people still cannot travel beyond their immediate area for exercise.

As such, North Wales Police has confirmed fishing is still prohibited.

The police force received a “number of” questions following Boris Johnson’s message last week and sought to clarify in a statement.

They reiterated the local government’s advice to stay home.

Their statement read: “Following a number of queries to the force control room we have sought clarification and the Welsh Government guidelines do not allow people to leave their home for the purpose of going fishing.

“The restrictions remain in place and the public in Wales are still urged to #stayhome.”

While lockdown conditions are laxer in England, people living in cities near Wales should think twice before venturing into the country for a fishing trip.

Boris Johnson’s rules allow them to travel as far as they wish in their cars, but Welsh regulations apply to those attempting to enter the country.

Welsh minister Jeremy Miles, who is responsible for the region’s coronavirus recovery programme, urged people not to drive into Wales as they would face fines.

He told BBC Wales: “I want to be really clear about this. The position in Wales is very different from the position in England in relation to that.

“Our regulations do not permit people to get in their cars and drive to destinations in Wales and this includes people getting in their cars in England.

“We are not permitting that in Wales.”
