Appearing after Prince Charles finished his isolation period after testing positive for Covid, the famously hardworking Princess Royal was met with particular praise as she jubilantly handed out the awards.

This comes in a highly controversial week for the Royal Family after Prince Andrew reached a financial settlement in principle out of court with Virginia Giuffre, who had accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 17.

The Duke of York has vehemently denied the allegations.

The Royal Family Twitter account explained that the event was to celebrate achievements in higher education.

It said: “Today at St James’s Palace, The Prince of Wales and The Princess Royal presented The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes @QAPrizes for higher and further education.

“The @QAPrizes are awarded to universities and colleges whose work has been judged to show excellence, innovation and impact, and to be of benefit to society.”

Aberdeen University received an award for their research and teaching in soil science, contributing to the control of greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable food production.

The University of Leeds was awarded for a similar area, praised for their research in climate and extreme weather.

Another notable winner was Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, who accepted the Queen’s Anniversary Prize on behalf of Oxford University – a few days after receiving her Damehood from the Princess Royal for her services to science and public health.

Despite typically being known for her cold countenance, Princess Anne was seen happy and smiling as she handed out the awards – and fans of the Royal Family rejoiced in seeing this side of her.

@MariaFiBorrini said: “Respect Beautiful photo of Princess Anna who finally finds her smile!”

@Crowninglory_: “The Princess Royal. Dedicated, diligent, sincere and awfully hardworking. Following wonderfully in the footsteps of HM The Queen”.

Many were also jubilant to see Prince Charles back in public following his positive Covid test and subsequent isolation.

The Prince of Wales contracting the virus was of particular concern given that he had been in contact with the 95-year-old Queen just two days prior.

One fan stated of the Prince and Princess: “Good to see them having brother and sister day out. Glad and lovely to see Prince Charles back in a good spirit!”

2022 is proving to be one of the most difficult years for the Royal family in recent memory.

As well as the controversy surrounding Andrew’s civil court case, many rumours are spreading about whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will return for the Queen’s 70th Jubilee celebrations.

Having stepped back from their royal duties in 2020, the couple now live with husband Harry in a $14million mansion in Montecito, California.

Speaking to the Sun, Royal biographer Tom Bower claimed Meghan has “no intention” of returning to London, and instead views Britain as a “lost cause”.

He said: “Meghan’s ultimate destination is unclear, but she certainly has the backing to make a bid to star as an American politician.

“In parallel, Britain is a lost cause for the Sussexes. In truth, I suspect Meghan no longer cares whether she is welcome in London. She has no intention of returning.”

However, Prince Harry is believed to have “reached out to his father” to have “friendly video calls” ahead of the Queen’s jubilee celebrations, and is tipped to return for the event this summer.
