Disgusting footage has emerged of a flight to Barcelona which was forced to land after an outbreak of diarrhoea left a messy trail all the way all the way down the plane.

Excrement and paper towels could be seen in the aisle of the evacuated aircraft following the mid-air disaster on Friday.

The Delta Airlines flight had taken off from Atlanta and was set for Barcelona when it was forced to turn around and return to the airport it came from after the pilot deemed the mess a ‘biohazard.’

Upon its return, maintenance crews spent five hours scrubbing the aircraft, including replacing an entire aisle carpet which was ruined in the incident.

Passengers, including the one suffering diarrhoea, were later allowed to re-board the flight after an eight-hour delay, arriving in Barcelona on Saturday afternoon with no further incident.

The person who shared the footage on Twitter said their little brother had been onboard the flight.

But although his sibling reportedly saw the funny side of the scatalogical situation, not everyone onboard had the same view.

One passenger said the flight crew initially did their best to clean the mess by mopping it up with paper towels and scented disinfectant.

But according to the passenger, that only served to make the plane ‘smell like vanilla s***’.

Another described how the cabin crew tried to mitigate the damage by placing an absorbent paper ‘runner’ down the aisle, and how passengers had to climb over seats to avoid the mess as they departed the plane in Atlanta.

Audio recordings from air traffic control audio recordings also reveal one of the pilots confirming the situation over the radio, saying: ‘It’s just a biohazard issue, we had a passenger who had diarrhoea all the way through the airplane so they want us to come back to Atlanta.’

‘Divert to ATL – passenger diarrhoea all over aircraft – biohazard,’ he added.

‘Both my wife and I were on the flight. It was a mess,’ a passenger commented on social media after the event.

‘The pilots made the right decision to turn around. The ground crew ripped out the carpet and put new [one] in. Considering the circumstances, the ground crew did a great job, along [with] the attendants and the pilots.’

Another woman, whose partner was on the flight, described the incident as: ‘Pretty bad. It dribbled down the aisle, smelled horrible.’

The plane was met by emergency vehicles upon landing who escorted the passenger off the plane before it was cleaned.

Although Delta has remained tight-lipped over the specifics of the incident, they did acknowledge the flight was turned around by an unexpected medical event.

‘Our teams worked as quickly and safely as possible to get our customers to their final destination. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay and inconvenience to their travel plans,’ the airline said.
