French luxury fashion brand Saint Laurent says it will stop using fur

French high-end fashion brand Saint Laurent will stop using fur in its products.

Its parent company Kering confirmed it would become the latest big name in fashion to distance itself from the cruel trade.

The luxury fashion house, which was founded in 1961 by designer Yves Saint Laurent, will phase out fur by 2022.

Kering brand Brioni will also stop using the material, making all the fashion group’s houses, which also include Gucci and Balenciaga, fur-free.

The influential company’s move away from fur began in 2017 and the policy also extends to brands Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen.

CEO François-Henri Pinault said: ‘For many years, Kering has sought to take the lead in sustainability, guided by a vision of luxury that is inseparable from the very highest environmental and social values and standards.

‘When it comes to animal welfare, our group has always demonstrated its willingness to improve practices within its own supply chain and the luxury sector in general.

‘The time has now come to take a further step forward by ending the use of fur in all our collections.

‘The world has changed, along with our clients, and luxury naturally needs to adapt to that.’
