Julia Hartley-Brewer went on a bitter rant about politicians, slamming them for their apparent ability to wrap the country around their little fingers when it comes to barking out “cruel” orders about how people must behave in pandemic times, but shockingly fail to live up to expectation themselves. The fuming TalkRADIO presenter referred to allegations of a Number 10 garden party on May 2020, which more than 100 Downing Street staff are said to have attended while the UK remained in a stringent lockdown and social mixing was prohibited. Ms Hartley-Brewer turned the screw on Prime Minister Boris Johnson, declaring that if it was down to her he would long have been forced to clear his desks as she accuses him and his party of condescending behaviour towards “the rest of us”.

She emphasised that people should be able to make their own decisions when it comes to dealing with the threat posed by COVID-19.

She said: “They continued to impose those very same cruel and unnecessary rules on the rest of us.

“And they brought them back again for most of 2021 for months on end. This shows nothing but contempt for the rest of us.

“They think the rest of us are just too stupid, too ignorant, too immoral to make decisions to keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our fellow citizens safe by making sensible decisions about handling Covid.”

Ms Hartley-Brewer highlighted that the days when politicians had the dignity to step down after a gross misconduct are long gone.

She suggested that unlike in years gone by, politicians nowadays refuse to shoulder any blame and issue an apology if they made a mistake.

She turned on the Tories, saying: “There was a time when people in public life were expected to behave with some integrity.

“They didn’t always behave with integrity but at least when they were caught out, they had the decency to resign, apparently not anymore!

“We may or may not find out all the details, we may or not may get an apology, a mea culpa, who knows?

“But it defies belief to me right now that anyone who organised or attended that party at Number 10 at the height of the first lockdown should still be in their job tomorrow, and I mean anyone!”

A leaked email sent to over a hundred Downing Street employees by top civil servant Martin Reynolds in May 2020 suggests that the Christmas party allegedly held in December of the same year might not have been the only one.

In the email, Mr Reynolds said: “Hi all, after what has been an incredibly busy period we thought it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No 10 garden this evening.

Ms Hartley-Brewer turned the screw on Mr Johnson, adding that deep down he knew that the restrictions he dished out were “stupid and unnecessary”.

She added: “They broke the rules because they knew no one was going to die if a group of healthy, young people who worked together all day met up for a drink in the garden and they were quite right about that.

“Yet they continued to impose those very same cruel and unnecessary rules on the rest of us.”
