The baby whale became stuck in the River Thames yesterday and unfortunately had to be put down rescuers have said. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said the Minke whale calf had “deteriorated rapidly” over the past few hours and was unlikely to survive.

One Twitter user said: “The police, fire crews, and the RNLI have worked through the night to try to free a baby mink whale stranded in the River Thames in southwest London.

“The whale was spotted in Richmond Lock on Sunday evening.”

Speaking to the BBC Jake Manketo from Richmond said: “We couldn’t believe our eyes when we first saw the poor fella.

“Not every day something like this happens in Richmond.”
