Tributes have been paid to a woman, named locally as Kate Swale, who was killed in a crash on the M62. Merseyside Police were called to reports of a crash on the M62 between J5 for Roby and J6 for Tarbock Island just after midnight on Saturday. A stretch of the route was closed for almost 11 hours after the crash between a grey Vauxhall Corsa and a silver Mercedes C180.

A man and woman were taken to hospital but the 21-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, has died.

People have been paying tribute to the young woman with one, Danny Thornley, writing: “Heart-breaking. Can’t believe it. RIP. We are all thinking of you and your family.”

Maxine White wrote on Liverpool Echo’s Facebook page: “RIP baby girl, heart-breaking thinking of all the family, especially her mum.”

Harry Vlasman added: “Rest in peace Kate, you will be missed, thinking of your family and friends.”

A friend of Ms Swale’s posted a tribute online which read: “How am I even writing this, oh my girl I am going to miss you so much.

“You never failed to light up any room you walked in. You had the kindest soul and I’m forever grateful to have made some of the most special memories with you.”

“I’ll miss our FaceTimes and our daily texts to each other. I wouldn’t [have] got through life if it weren’t for you. Thank you for always being that friend I could count on. Hope [you’re] dancing with the stars now our Queen, forever 21.”

Merseyside Police has said that a man Ms Swales was in the car with was also taken to hospital, but his condition was not life-threatening.
