Help with energy bills for all households will only last until April next year

New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has announced that help with energy bills for all households will only last until April.

He announced a review to look at a ‘new approach’ to target support at those worst off after that.

In a televised briefing today, he said that he and prime minister Liz Truss were committed to helping all households this winter.

But ‘beyond that, it would not be responsible to keep exposing public finances’ to global energy prices, he said.

Liz Truss had previously said there would be support for two years, after updating the nation urgently on energy prices as soon as she came into office.

Her plan was to freeze average energy bills at £2,500 a year, funded by borrowing.

But Mr Hunt now says that any support after April will only be targeted to those most vulnerable – meaning many households could still find themselves in crisis by next spring.
