The plane, a Boeing 737 36N/W,, had departed from Leeds and is currently overflying the English Channel. Squawk 7600 is used to alert air traffic control that the aircraft has lost communications with the tower. When contact cannot be established, planes are directed using aviation light signals, which provide either the pilot with clearance to land or indicate unsafe conditions in case radio contact fails.
