Years before she met Prince William, Kate Middleton built a connection with Prince Philip as she joined his acclaimed Duke of Edinburgh award. Just like the Queen’s late husband loved to be outside flying planes, the Duchess is an active person who has never been scared of getting her hands dirty.

Much like the Duke, Kate shared a passion for adventure, with Philip happiest when he was busy being a “doer”.

In Philip Schofield’s documentary “When Phillip Met Prince Philip: 60 Years of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award,” which aired in the UK in 2016, Kate confirmed that she took part in the program while being in the sixth form at Marlborough College.

She even managed to earn her Gold Award.

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is such a great way for young people to grow in confidence, learn new skills, work as part of a team and have great fun along the way,” Kate has said.

“I can remember trying to cook bacon in the soaking wet.

“Everything was just sopping and I was trying and trying to cook bacon.

“I remember saying you know what, ‘I think we’re just going to have plain sandwiches. Bread, basic bread and butter.

“While getting my Gold Award was challenging at times, it is one of my most memorable experiences from growing up, and I could not recommend it more highly.”

The late monarch and Kate also share an interest in sailing.

Philip had a career in the navy but also enjoyed sailing with Prince Charles in the Dragon Class keelboat Bluebottle, and was a regular competitor at Cowes Week.

Kate’s parents would take her and her siblings on sailing holidays.

She also has experience as a skipper and is currently the royal patron of the sailing charity 1851 Trust.

Prince William, when releasing a statement after his grandfather’s death, mentioned how his wife and Prince Philip had a close bond.

“I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her.

“I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!”
