The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will celebrate their 10 year wedding anniversary in April this year. The couple have three children ‒ Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis ‒ and have taken on ever more responsibilities within the Royal Family. However, the couple were actually dating for around eight years before they even got engaged, having met at St Andrews’ University.

During this time, they had their ups and downs, most notably in 2007 when they temporarily broke up.

After the hiccup, which lasted a few months, they rekindled their romance at the Concert for Diana in the summer.

The Christmas before, Kate had been invited to spend Christmas at Sandringham with the Royal Family, but reportedly turned down the opportunity.

A friend claimed she said she would only go to Sandringham once she and William were married.

Around this time, there was a frenzy in the media with many outlets predicting that the couple were about to get engaged very soon.

According to the friend, the couple found it “hilarious” and kept a tally of every time it was speculated about.

They said: “Kate said she won’t be going to Sandringham until she’s a part of the family.

“She has made it quite clear that she will only be at a royal Christmas if she and William get married, and that’s not yet on the cards.

“We all know it’s going to happen, but it’s not going to happen this Christmas.

“Kate and William find all the speculation hilarious and they have a wall chart with a tally of how many times the papers predict they will marry.”

Despite the friend’s claim that Kate and William laughed about it, there also seems to have been a slight disparity in how each of them felt about the relationship at the time.

Ironically, just as the speculation that he was going to propose was reaching a fever point, William was having doubts.

He was allegedly supposed to spend New Year with Kate and her family, but called on Boxing Day to cancel.

Over the next few months, he struggled with the idea of committing to Kate completely, and she is said to have given him an ultimatum that led to their temporary split in March.

Of course, it did not last long, and the two were soon reunited.

However, the friend insisted that their reasons for being apart over the festive season was simply due to wanting to spend time with their families.

They said: “Kate would love to be with William on Christmas Day, and it was a huge honour for her to be invited, but she is very close to her family and wants to share Christmas with them.

“The whole family are leaving Berkshire this weekend and heading for Scotland where they have hired a house in the countryside for all the extended aunts and uncles and the Middleton’s friends to be there.

“Carole, Kate’s mother, wants it to be a week-long celebration.

“Although Kate isn’t a wild party girl, her parents love entertaining and really know how to throw a bash.

“They have rented a farmhouse in Perthshire and have arranged several days of shooting and big family dinners followed by nights of drinking around a big log fire.”

Even after Kate and William got back together, they did not get engaged for several years.

William finally popped the question in 2010 and they tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in April 2011.

Kate said in the couple’s engagement video that, although their break up had been difficult at the time, she “valued” that time to discover who she was independently of William.

This April 29 will be their 10 year wedding anniversary.
