The idea came to the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother when she was planning for Kate’s birthday back in the 1980s. Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton, told Good Housekeeping magazine: “Back in 1987, I was a young mother looking for inspiration for Catherine’s fifth birthday party. All I could find was a range of paper plates decorated with clowns.

“I realised there was a gap in the market for time-pressed parents like me.

“Parents who wanted to create imaginative parties for their children.

“I put together a small range of products that I knew would help patents hold simple but fun parties for their little ones.

“Things I would choose for our parties.”

The grandmother to Kate’s children, Prince George, 7, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2 described her first attempts at advertising her business idea.

She said: “I advertised the business with a poster at Pipa’s nursery.

“A couple of orders came in, and Party Pieces was up and running.”

The mother of Kate Middleton then went on to describe how the Duchess, when she was young, used to enjoy helping her mother with the burgeoning business.

Carole Middleton said: “It was the kind of business that was family friendly anyway.

“When they were small the children enjoyed being around the toys and balloons and were often the chief product testers and feedback committee.”

The recent Palace source has described how the Duchess of Cambridge is concentrating on her children amid the furore after the Oprah Winfrey interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The Palace source said: “Kate is definitely strong enough to get through this.

“She has a lead by example attitude, so it’s important for her to be a good role model to them.

“George and Charlotte are back at school, but she’s been spending her evenings with them.

“The children always brighten up her day, and she always says that when she goes through a difficult time, having her family there always helps.

“She feels so blessed to have her kids and a loving family.”
