King Charles III could take the “pretty drastic” decision to strip Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of their titles, a royal biographer said amid fears the Duke of Sussex’s book will be damaging to the Firm. Royal commentator Tom Bower described Harry’s memoir, titled Spare, “make or break”. Speaking to The Sun, he added: “I imagine that King Charles has been warned that any retaliation won’t be pretty. All that King Charles can really do is to withhold the titles for his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet. Ultimately, I suppose, he could take away Harry and Meghan’s titles as well, but that’s pretty drastic. I don’t know what else he can do. If it is as bad as I think it is, then Harry and Meghan have gone fully rogue. The best the family can do is to break ties with them.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex retained their full titles after stepping down as working royals, but can no longer use their HRH styles in an official capacity. To strip his son of his dukedom, Charles would need an act of Parliament. Harry and Meghan’s children Lilibet and Archie became eligible for an HRH style and the titles of Princess and Prince following Charles’s accession to the throne, as the grandchildren of the sovereign. While the Palace has not shared whether the monarch wants to give titles to his California-based grandchildren, royal author Katie Nicholl argued he may wait until the publication of Harry’s memoir, to be released on January 10, before making a decision about Arche and Lili’s titles.
