Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should be stripped of their royal titles, a new poll of Express.co.uk readers has found. King Charles III reportedly could make the move in retaliation for the Duke of Sussex’s upcoming memoir Spare, due to be published on January 10, 2023. The highly-anticipated book is due to explore Harry’s time in the Royal Family and detail his journey from “trauma to healing” with “raw unflinching honesty”, according to publisher Penguin Random House.

Royal Family enthusiast Nile Gardiner warned that the couple could lose their royal titles if the publication attacks the Firm. He told Express.co.uk: “Buckingham Palace will be very concerned by the release of Harry’s book. There is a lot of nervousness about it.”

He claimed that the memoir could do a “great deal of damage” and have a “catastrophic” impact on the couple’s standing, warning that “Harry and Meghan will be cast into wilderness and lose their royal titles if this is an all-out onslaught against the Royal Family.”

Similarly, royal commentator Tom Bower told The Sun last weekend: “This book is really make or break. I imagine that King Charles has been warned that any retaliation won’t be pretty.”

He added: “All that King Charles can really do is to withhold the titles for his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet. Ultimately, I suppose, he could take away Harry and Meghan’s titles as well, but that’s pretty drastic. I don’t know what else he can do. If it is as bad as I think it is, then Harry and Meghan have gone fully rogue. The best the family can do is to break ties with them.”

In a poll that ran from 9:30am on Monday, October 31, to 11am on Wednesday, November 2, Express.co.uk asked readers: “Should King Charles strip Meghan and Harry of royal titles?”

Overall, 23,003 people responded with the overwhelming answer with 97 percent (22,328 people) of votes being “yes”, the King should strip Meghan and Harry of their royal titles.

Whereas three percent (589 people) said “no” he should not, while a further 86 people said they did not know.

Harry and Meghan were gifted their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles by Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day on May 19, 2018.

However, when the couple chose to step down from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 and relocate to the US they lost their right to use their HRH status.

In order to revoke the Sussex dukedom, a statute will need to be passed through the Houses of Parliament.

Some readers argued that the couple should have lost their titles when they left the Firm, with username BOCAfan writing: “Should’ve been stripped when they quit.”

Username Dowhat said: “Should have been done a long time ago.”

And username old nick said: “The Queen should have done it before she passed away, now the King should definitely do it, and now rather than later.”

While username thehonesttruth said: “Stripping the titles is only the start and should’ve been done the moment they became non-working royals.”

Such calls to remove the couple’s royal titles come as the King reportedly has “no desire” to strip Harry of his role as Counsellor of State. It is understood that the list of Counsellors will be expanded to give the Sovereign more flexibility in choosing his deputies in his absence.
