Emergency crews and specialist units have been called to a fire on Pepper Road, Hunslet. Pictures taken from the scene by worried locals show thick black smoke billowing into the sky. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue warned the incident is “creating a lot of smoke in the area”.

The fire brigade urged people to stay away from the area and advised residents to keep all windows and doors shut.

Several worried resident shared their concerns on Twitter and one user said they could see the smoke from as far away as Bradford.

One user wrote: “What’s happening in Hunslet?”

A second added: “Hmm… anyone know what the fire is? Looks to be around Hunslet Road.”

A third said: “Can see this Hunslet fire on Pepper Road from Thornton, Bradford!”

In a statement, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Ten fire engines and specialist units are in attendance at a fire in Pepper Road, Hunslet.

“It is creating a lot of smoke in the area.

“Local residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed.

“Please avoid travelling through the area.
