Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s newborn daughter has a special meaning behind her nickname Lili. Although the one-week-old has strong royal associations, it also has a connection to the flower Lily of the Valley, which Meghan carried in her wedding bouquet. Officially named Lilibet Diana, the couple’s daughter was born on Friday, June 4.

Royal experts Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie analysed the heartwarming meaning behind her name on their podcast Royally Obsessed.

They said, “Lily of the Valley has been in all of the royal bouquets.”

“It’s abundant in late spring and symbolises the return of happiness which is really sweet because it feels like they’re returning to a place where they feel less pressure and they feel really safe and secure.”

Both Princess Diana and the Duchess of Cambridge also carried Lily of the Valley in their wedding bouquets.

Meghan Markle married Prince Harry on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Other flowers included in the bouquet were forget-me-nots and scented sweet peas and was designed by florist Phillipa Craddock. Prince Harry selected several of the flowers as a tribute to his mother Princess Diana.

Upon their wedding, the couple became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Since then, they have stepped back as senior members of the Royal Family and have relocated to Montecito, California.

The couple have recently welcomed their second child, daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Meghan Markle gave birth on Friday, June 4 at 11:40am at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The baby weighed 7lbs 11oz and a spokesperson for the couple said both mother and baby were “healthy and well, and settling in at home”.

Named after both her great-grandmother and grandmother, the name choice is a touching tribute to the Royal Family.

Lilibet was the childhood nickname of the Queen which was given to her by her parents. As an infant, she was unable to pronounce the name Elizabeth, which led to King George VI and the Queen Mother affectionately calling her Lilibet.

Princess Diana, Prince Harry’s late mother, has also been honoured with the choice of second name.

The couple released a statement on their website Archewell to thank the public for their well wishes and said that Lili was “more than we could ever have imagined”.

Lilibet Diana has joined the couple’s two-year-old son Archie Harrison at their family home.
